The book is dedicated to Whit Burnett and Martha Foley. Burnett and Foley, married at the time, were the founders of Story Magazine, which first published the story The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze.
The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze and other stories was Saroyan's first book. it was named after his story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" that ran in Story Magazine in February, 1934.
The book became a best-seller, establishing Saroyan as a rising star.
